What is IVF ?

IVF (In vitro fertilization) is a medical process by which fertilization is achieved outside the human body.

It is an advanced technology of assisted reproduction. In vitro fertilization involves obtaining an ovum from a female and fusing it with a sperm in the test tube. The zygote obtained after fertilization is then implanted into the uterus of the same mother or another mother to successfully achieve pregnancy.

IVF becomes handy when less invasive or other appropriate ways of  treating Infertility and achieving unassisted reproduction are impossible. IVF assists women who have never given birth to achieve pregnancy and eventually give birth.

In order to acquire the ova, ovulation has to be induced by use of fertility drugs. The ova can then be monitored through trans-vaginal ultrasound and retraction of eggs is by follicular aspiration.

Types of IVF are as follows

  1. Natural Cycle IVF- In this type of IVF, there is no induction of ova production by the ovaries. The eggs used in IVF are obtained from normal cycle without stimulation by drugs or any other means.
  1. Low Stimulation IVF- This is another form of IVF in which hormones that induce fertility are stimulated for a short time. This reduces chances of hyper-production of eggs.
  1. Donor eggs IVF- This is a form of IVF in which the recipient gets an ovum from a relatively younger donor. Getting a more viable ovum from a younger donor guarantees more chances of successful pregnancy
  1. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) IVF- This is a form of IVF used when the proposed male experiences oligospermia. This means the sperm count is too low and chances of in vitro fertilization are minimal. The sperm is therefore injected directly into the ovum to maximize chances of fertilization.

Cost implications play a major role in deciding whether to undertake IVF  treatment or not.

How much does an IVF cost  or an In vitro fertilization cost?

Averagely, a successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) costs $ 5500- 6500 per cycle

This amount is inclusive of cycle stimulation medications and trans-vaginal harvesting of eggs. Medications can cost about $1000 on average while a whole IVF cycle stimulation can cost up to $6500 per cycle.

In conclusion, IVF plays a major role in giving a chance to women who cannot conceive naturally to give birth. Inducing egg production by the ovaries, obtaining and incubating them with sperms enables fertilization outside the body.

Implantation into the recipient mother and successful pregnancy then marks a complete cycle of assisted reproduction.
