Happy Mother’s Day ! Every woman deserves to be one

Happy Mother's DayEveryone woman deserves to be a mother and enjoy the trials , tribulations and joy which only motherhood can beget.

This mother’s day, lets look at a few reasons why some of us find it difficult to be a mother.

What is Infertility ?

Inability to conceive a child naturally is usually termed as infertility.

The most common reasons for female infertility include problems with ovulation, damage to fallopian tubes or uterus, or problems with the cervix.

Fertility also decreases with age, hence the older you are the more difficult natural conception is.

Hormonal imbalance, PCOD or polycystic ovarian disease, obesity, bulimia, anorexia, drug abuse, alcoholism are often contribution factors which hamper ovulation.

Other factors such as endometriosis, fibroids, polyps in the uterus, tumors, previous history of STD or sexually transmitted diseases, previous illness such as cancer, previous ectopic pregnancy, changes in mucosa of the cervix which hampers transportation of sperms are contributing factors in damaging the fallopian tubes and the uterus resulting in infertility.

What are the options when one is finding it difficult to conceive naturally ?

Taking medication or hormones to address hormone imbalance, endometriosis, PCOD is an option.

Very often hormones to stimulate ovulation are also provided.
Regular checkups and medication to remove infection is also a must.

Surgeries such as DNC for endometriosis and myomectomy or fibroid removal also help resolve the problem

If all fails, IVF is the often the last option.

What is IVF ?

In vitro fertilization or IVf is an assisted reproductive technique.

During IVF, eggs and sperm are brought together in a laboratory glass dish to allow the sperm to fertilise an egg.

After IVF, one or more fertilized eggs are placed in the uterus for the mother to carry the pregnancy through.

How does In Vitro Fertilization work ?

IVF treatments start evaluation of the male sperm followed by hormone therapy to stimulate the development of several follicles in the ovary.

These are collected as eggs, which are then fertilised in a test-tube (‘in vitro’) .

This leads to several embryos which are kept in an incubator for two and five days.

After assessing the quality, one or two of these embryos are transferred through the vagina to the uterus at the right time, where implantation begins.

However, not every embryo implanted leads to a successful pregnancy, and hence surplus embryos are frozen , so that subsequent implantations can be attempted should the first ones fail.

This leads to the IVF success rates varying between 20-40%.

IVF cost in India, varies from US$ 4500 per cycle to US$ 6500 per cycle depending upon whether ICSI ( incase of male infertility) is required or not.

What is IVF ?

IVF (In vitro fertilization) is a medical process by which fertilization is achieved outside the human body.

It is an advanced technology of assisted reproduction. In vitro fertilization involves obtaining an ovum from a female and fusing it with a sperm in the test tube. The zygote obtained after fertilization is then implanted into the uterus of the same mother or another mother to successfully achieve pregnancy.

IVF becomes handy when less invasive or other appropriate ways of  treating Infertility and achieving unassisted reproduction are impossible. IVF assists women who have never given birth to achieve pregnancy and eventually give birth.

In order to acquire the ova, ovulation has to be induced by use of fertility drugs. The ova can then be monitored through trans-vaginal ultrasound and retraction of eggs is by follicular aspiration.

Types of IVF are as follows

  1. Natural Cycle IVF- In this type of IVF, there is no induction of ova production by the ovaries. The eggs used in IVF are obtained from normal cycle without stimulation by drugs or any other means.
  1. Low Stimulation IVF- This is another form of IVF in which hormones that induce fertility are stimulated for a short time. This reduces chances of hyper-production of eggs.
  1. Donor eggs IVF- This is a form of IVF in which the recipient gets an ovum from a relatively younger donor. Getting a more viable ovum from a younger donor guarantees more chances of successful pregnancy
  1. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) IVF- This is a form of IVF used when the proposed male experiences oligospermia. This means the sperm count is too low and chances of in vitro fertilization are minimal. The sperm is therefore injected directly into the ovum to maximize chances of fertilization.

Cost implications play a major role in deciding whether to undertake IVF  treatment or not.

How much does an IVF cost  or an In vitro fertilization cost?

Averagely, a successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) costs $ 5500- 6500 per cycle

This amount is inclusive of cycle stimulation medications and trans-vaginal harvesting of eggs. Medications can cost about $1000 on average while a whole IVF cycle stimulation can cost up to $6500 per cycle.

In conclusion, IVF plays a major role in giving a chance to women who cannot conceive naturally to give birth. Inducing egg production by the ovaries, obtaining and incubating them with sperms enables fertilization outside the body.

Implantation into the recipient mother and successful pregnancy then marks a complete cycle of assisted reproduction.

Best Hospital in India for IVF offer complete assistance for assisted hatching, donor sperms, donor eggs and also surrogacy if required.
