Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Commonly known as bone marrow failure, in Myelodysplastic Syndrome or MDS as it is called, the bone marrow does not produce healthy cells.
The function of bone marrow is to produce blasts of immature cells or stem cells which mature into adult healthy red blood, white blood cells, and platelets.
In MDS, these stem cells do not mature or die too soon that is, have a shortened life span and accumulate in the bone marrow itself.
This results in a fewer than normal blood cells in the body.
